Who Are You?: Tropes vs. Identity in A Song of Ice and Fire

Who, who, who, who? In the A Song of Ice and Fire series, one of the main themes that gets thrown around is identity. Lineage is meticulously kept and who your parents are determines pretty much your entire life. Then there are the numerous stories of brave heroes and beautiful damsels that knights and maidens have to live up to. George R.R. Martin likes to do is play around with classic fantasy tropes, especially those concerning characters. The righteous king, the evil queen, the lost hero, etc., are all present and accounted for, but in the hands of Martin, are a bit more complicated. Today, we’re going to take a look at just some of the characters that fight with their identities and what can happen because of it.
